Takin the Game Outside
The Concrete Cup tournament was held in St. George on August 4th, 2007. Six teams of four players and one goalie competed in two on two action under sunny skies at the Sunnyhill Park. The day was filled with great action, music, food and prizes up for grabs for the winners. Those players and fans that attended talked about the NHL Breakout energy that was in the air! What a nice compliment as this is where the Mudhog Organization first made a name for itself when  the our teams would compete in as many as three breakout qualifiers a year and then top it off with a trip to the Finals.
I have often felt that this is where the game was meant to be played. Outside under sunny skies with tunes playing in the background. After all this is where the majority of us fell in love with the game of roller hockey.
Let’s get back to the action of the day which saw Team Benson and Team Booger finish out round robin play on top with Team Boakes 3rd, Team Rupe 4th, Team Wenter 5th and Team Brownie ready to make their move in 6th.
The first round of the playoffs would see Team Boakes do away with Team Brownie and Team Rupe lose a close match to Team Wenter.
The semi-finals action picked up with Team Boakes and Team Benson going to OT after a last second goal by Team Benson. There would be no shootout as Team Benson ended the game the first two minutes into overtime.
The second game of the semis saw Team Wenter looking to take out another high seed by knocking off Team Booger. That would not be the case though as Team Booger took control of the game and never looked back.
The finals would not disappoint as Team Benson and Team Booger would put on a classic outdoor game. You had the talent and finesse of Team Benson pitted against the grit, determination and heart of Team Booger. When the final minute ticked down to zero it would be Team Booger that would win the first ever Concrete Cup!
Top Forward of the tourney went to Kevin Lee of Team Booger and Top Goalie to Darryl Dempsey. Great job guys!
